The modulating gas valve opens only enough to deliver the amount of gas needed to heat your home, while the variable-speed motor operates at the lowest level possible, slowly ramping up rather than just full speed ahead. In fact, this furnace has a rating of up to 96% AFUE (Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency), meaning that 96 cents of every dollar of heating energy expense heats your home, compared to some older central heating systems which are rated at only 80% AFUE.
