Commercial Packaged Units
About Commercial Packaged Units
Commercial packaged units combine the main heating and cooling components—including the compressor, indoor coil, and blower—in a single outdoor cabinet. Connected to the building’s ductwork, they deliver conditioned air throughout the space without requiring a separate indoor air handler.
Often called rooftop units, commercial packaged systems are commonly installed on a roof curb. Select models also support ground-level installation with horizontal duct connections. Choose from gas/electric, air conditioner, and heat pump configurations to match your building’s heating source and cooling needs.
Gas/Electric Commercial Packaged Units
Gas/electric packaged units combine electric air conditioning with a gas furnace in one cabinet. During warm weather, the air conditioner removes heat from the building. During cold weather, the gas furnace heats the air before the blower distributes it through the ductwork.
Standard- and high-efficiency models are available, with different cooling capacities and gas heating outputs. For propane applications, select a model with an approved LP conversion kit.
Air Conditioner Commercial Packaged Units
Air conditioner packaged units combine the cooling system and blower in one outdoor cabinet. They provide ducted air conditioning for buildings that use a separate heating source or do not require heating.
Compatible models can accept optional electric heat kits, allowing the same unit to provide electric resistance heating. Heat kits are selected separately to match the equipment and the building’s heating and electrical requirements.
Heat Pump Commercial Packaged Units
Heat pump packaged units provide electric heating and cooling in one cabinet. In cooling mode, they remove heat from the building and release it outdoors. In heating mode, they reverse the process, drawing heat from outdoor air and transferring it indoors.
Compatible electric heat kits can provide supplemental heating when needed. Heat pump performance and supplemental heat requirements depend on the climate and the building’s heating load.
Accessories for Your Installation
Depending on the model and application, accessories may include roof curbs, replacement curb adapters, economizers, outdoor-air dampers, electric heat kits, hail guards, and LP conversion kits.
Roof curbs support rooftop installations and provide the connection to the ductwork. Curb adapters help compatible replacement units fit an existing curb. Economizers and outdoor-air dampers manage outside air entering the system; economizers can also reduce mechanical cooling demand when outdoor conditions are suitable.
Accessory compatibility varies by equipment model, size, electrical configuration, and airflow orientation.
Choosing the Right Packaged Unit
Start with the required cooling capacity, heating source, and building electrical service. Your installing contractor should also confirm heating output, airflow requirements, duct connections, and roof curb compatibility. Standard- and high-efficiency options allow you to compare initial equipment cost with potential operating savings.
