This kit is used when you need to make a reduction from 1 1/8" O.D. to a 7/8" O.D.

This kit isn't needed to reduce from a 1 1/8" suction to a 7/8" suction line if you purchase Alpine Home Air Products Kit014. Kit014 contains the JMF CF118-78 kit along with several additional installation accessories that are used when installing a new split AC system or heat pump. 

On higher tonnage split AC units and heat pumps it is common that the manufacturers recommend the use of a line set with an 1 1/8 inch suction line line (larger referigerant line). 

It is very uncommon for the higher tonnage split AC units or heat pump to have an 1 1/8 inch suction line connection and the largest suction line connection on an evaporator coil (indoor unit) is never more than 7/8 inch. 

So when using a refrigerant line set with an 1 1/8 inch suction line you will always need to transition at least one end of the system.
