DIY Mini-Split Systems

A DIY ductless mini-split system offers an efficient and flexible way to heat and cool a single room or your entire home. Available in single-zone and multi-zone configurations, these systems use pre-charged line sets with quick-connect fittings, no pressure testing or vacuum pump required. Simply add the correct line set length and any necessary mounting or electrical components to complete your setup. No ductwork needed, making them ideal for additions, garages, basements, and more.

Single Zone vs. Multi-Zone Mini-Splits

Blueridge mini-splits provide air conditioning and heat to an interior space without the use of ducts. These convenient systems consist of an outdoor unit–called a condenser or heat pump–connected to one or more indoor air handlers. Single-zone systems condition one room with a single air handler, while multi-zone systems cover multiple separate rooms, each with its own air handler. One room air conditioners range in size from the smallest 6,000 BTU units covering 150-250 square foot rooms to the largest, most powerful systems providing 60,000 BTUs in a 2,500 square foot commercial setting. In contrast, multi zone systems can offer climate control throughout an entire house with several rooms. Each air handler in a multi zone system will be appropriately sized to its associated space.

While many generic BTU sizing charts will recommend larger single-zone systems for residential applications, our experience has shown that larger rooms over 600 square feet may be better served by a 2 zone mini-split. By dividing the required BTUs of a larger space between two air handlers, a dual zone system will be better able to mix the air and maintain climate control throughout the room. Features and Benefits of Ductless Mini-Splits

Single Zone Mini-splits offer a host of benefits, including:

  1. Lower cost than modifying or replacing existing ducted equipment

  2. Straightforward installation (90-100% DIY if you are handy)

  3. Year-round energy efficiency (= lower energy bills)

  4. Whisper-quiet operation

  5. Independent climate control (heat and cool the space you need, when you need it)

  6. WiFi connectivity and smartphone / smart home hub compatible

  7. Style choices for mini-split air handlers (indoor units) to suit the look of your space and optimize comfort

Favorite Uses for Single Zone Mini-Splits

A single-zone ductless air conditioner is a simple solution for a wide range of applications. These units can serve as a room’s primary source of heating and cooling or provide supplemental temperature control where it’s needed. Consider the following scenarios:

Garage or Shed

Suppose you want to convert your attached or detached garage or freestanding shed into a livable space–perhaps a home gym, game room, or workshop. These largely or wholly uninsulated spaces with no existing HVAC call for a ductless AC and heating system (aka mini-split) that will keep you comfortable no matter what mother nature has in store. For extreme climates, we recommend a 4 or 5 Series Blueridge mini-split. For more information on how to properly size a mini-split for a garage or similar structure, see our article, “How to Choose the Right Mini-Split for Your Garage,” or reach out to one of our HVAC experts.

Room Additions and Other Challenging Spaces

People commonly use mini-splits to supplement air conditioning (AC) and heat in a room addition. In many cases, an existing conventional HVAC system won’t have the capacity or duct design to cover the needs of an additional room. A single-room air conditioner makes a versatile, efficient, and easy-to-install comfort solution for the new addition without putting extra stress on your existing system.

In large and multi-story homes, the temperature can vary significantly from one part of the home to another. Especially in two-story homes, it can be difficult to perfectly balance a ducted system to work optimally in both heating and cooling seasons. As a result, you might end up with a bedroom that is always hotter or cooler than the rest of the home. In that case, you can use a single-zone ductless mini-split to control the temperature for that particular problem area. It’s a comfort solution that can transform sleep quality, leading to increased productivity during the day.

Understanding Mini-Split Sizing

Mini-split air conditioners are rated in tons and measured in BTUs (British Thermal Units, which gauge heat). In HVAC terms, “tonnage” indicates how much heat (in BTUs) an AC system can remove from a space within an hour. For example, a 1-ton mini-split will remove 12000 BTUs per hour. These terms are interchangeable when shopping for a mini-split.

Capacity Breakdown:

1 ton mini split = 12000 BTU

1.5 ton mini split = 18000 BTU

2 ton mini split = 24000 BTU

3 ton mini split = 36000 BTU

Step 1: Gauge Your Space

Begin sizing your mini-split by calculating your square footage. This provides an estimate of cooling power required in tons or BTUs. While this baseline is crucial, factors like ceiling height, windows, and insulation also influence sizing. Our Ductless Mini-Split System Selector takes these factors in. Easy Installation

Ductless mini-splits are far easier to install than traditional HVAC systems. Many of our customers complete 90% of the installation themselves, and the handiest among them choose a single-zone DIY mini split, allowing them to complete the entire project on their own. For more information on installation, see our article (including step-by-step videos), “How to Install a Mini-Split in 4 Steps.” If installing a mini-split system is not for you, we can help you find a licensed installer in your area.
